The real thing
La Jument stands offshore of Ushant, Brittany, France. Construction began in 1904 and it was first lit in 1911; it is 157 ft (48 m) tall and was automated in 1991. Photographer Jean Guichard's 1989 storm photo of it became one of the most famous lighthouse images. The Pharos of Alexandria, built around 280 BC, was an estimated 338-387 ft (103-118 m) tall and ranked among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
